How to export your American Express transactions
Download the transactions from your American Express credit and charge cards as a file you can keep, open in a spreadsheet or bring into RichDue.
Checked on against the sources linked under each part. American Express moves its menus from time to time, so each step names the words to look for.
On americanexpress.com
- Sign in at americanexpress.com and open “Statements & Activity”.
- Choose a billing period, or set your own date range.
- Select “Download” (the arrow above the transactions).
- Pick the file type and select “Download” again.
American Express’s help describes the download on americanexpress.com, so use a browser rather than the Amex app.
Which file to choose
Choose Quicken (QFX). CSV and Excel work too.
QFX and OFX files carry an id for every transaction, so a month you download twice doesn’t double anything.
How far back you can go
Two years of transactions download as CSV, Excel or PDF. The Quicken and QuickBooks files cover recent activity and the last six billing statements.
What’s in the file
Charges are positive and payments and credits negative, the opposite of most banks.
What RichDue handles for you
- Amex prints charges as positive numbers. RichDue flips them so spending is negative like every other account, and only when the file’s signs clearly agree, since three columns alone don’t prove a file is from Amex.
Bring it into RichDue
Start free, answer six questions, then open Import and drop the file. RichDue shows every row before anything is saved: duplicates, transfers between your accounts and categories are marked, and you confirm.
Screenshots, bank alerts, statements or two taps: RichDue reads them, catches duplicates and asks before saving.
